Statements of Heritage Impact & Section 60 Applications (NSW)

For historic (non-Aboriginal) heritage — listed buildings, sites and locally significant places.

A Statement of Heritage Impact (SOHI) assesses how proposed works will affect a historic heritage item and how impacts will be managed. For items on the NSW State Heritage Register, works with more than minor impact also require a Section 60 approval from the Heritage Council of NSW under the Heritage Act 1977.

What we prepare

Historic archaeology depth

COLCO’s historic experience spans colonial-era sites, blacksmith’s workshops, hut sites and contact-period places — including excavation of significant historic sites in NSW and Tasmania. As a NSW-approved Excavation Director for historic sites, Dr Collins can take a project from assessment through to excavation if required.

Common questions

When do I need a Statement of Heritage Impact?

Generally whenever you propose works to a heritage-listed item, or to a property near one, or in a heritage conservation area. Councils require a SOHI as part of the DA. If the item is on the State Heritage Register, a Section 60 approval may also be needed.

What is a Section 60 application?

It is the approval required under the Heritage Act 1977 for works that will have more than a minor impact on an item listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. It is determined by the Heritage Council of NSW, usually via a delegate, with a faster pathway for minor works.
